Yes, you read that right. Apple is expected to unveil a new generation of iPhones in the coming weeks, but the model simply called the iPhone 18 probably won’t be among them. It sounds strange, especially since we’ve spent years getting used to seeing almost the entire new lineup arrive at once. But everything suggests Apple has decided to change that schedule.
The expectation is that September will be reserved for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and Apple’s first foldable iPhone. The standard iPhone 18, meanwhile, is expected to arrive only in early 2027.
And this possibility is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.
The iPhone 18 really does appear to be moving to 2027
The first rumors about this change began appearing a few months ago.
In January, a Reuters report citing information from Nikkei Asia said Apple planned to focus on its more expensive models in 2026 and hold the standard iPhone 18 until the first half of the following year.
Since then, other reports have started pointing in the same direction.
Reports from the supply chain indicate that one of the major customers of Asian manufacturers will adopt a different smartphone production schedule this year.
Everything points to that customer being Apple.
The current expectation is that the standard iPhone 18 will enter production later and be unveiled only in the first quarter of 2027.
Apple, of course, has not confirmed any of this.
Even so, when different sources start telling essentially the same story, the rumor becomes much harder to dismiss.
But September will still be iPhone month
This is where things can get a little confusing.
Saying Apple is not expected to launch the iPhone 18 in September does not mean we’re getting an event without new iPhones.
Quite the opposite.
The new generation should still arrive as expected, but with the spotlight on the more expensive models.
So far, the three major products expected to take center stage are:
- iPhone 18 Pro
- iPhone 18 Pro Max
- Apple’s first foldable iPhone
That foldable still doesn’t have an official name. In rumors, it is usually referred to as the iPhone Fold and, in some cases, the iPhone Ultra.
In other words, September could end up bringing one of the most important iPhone events in recent years.
But this time, the most mainstream model may be missing.
Why would Apple make such a big change?
At first, it may seem strange for Apple not to launch the iPhone 18 alongside the Pro models.
But there is some logic behind the decision.
By splitting its launches into two separate periods, Apple would no longer have to concentrate nearly all of its major iPhone announcements into a single part of the year.
The premium models would arrive in September, just in time for the holiday shopping season.
Then, a few months later, the company would get another opportunity to put the iPhone back in the spotlight, this time with more affordable models.
In practice, Apple could create two major iPhone launch cycles every year.
And that wouldn’t only make sense from a marketing standpoint.
Component shortages could also be part of the equation
There is another issue unfolding behind the scenes.
The explosion in artificial intelligence has dramatically increased demand for chips and memory.
Companies building massive AI data centers are buying enormous quantities of these components, and manufacturers are naturally shifting more and more production capacity toward that market.
The result is a growing battle for manufacturing capacity.
Smartphones, computers, and other electronics all end up competing for many of the same suppliers.
Apple is feeling that pressure too.
If the company cannot secure enough components to produce every new iPhone at the same time and in the quantities it wants, there is an obvious choice: prioritize the devices that generate the highest returns.
And the Pro models fit that description perfectly.
The foldable iPhone makes things even more complicated
There is one more important piece to this story.
Everything suggests that 2026 will finally be the year Apple enters the foldable smartphone market.
And launching a completely new product is very different from updating a model that has existed for years.
Apple has to deal with new components, a different display, a hinge, new assembly processes, and a supply chain that still has to learn how to manufacture the device at scale.
All of this requires space, suppliers, and manufacturing capacity.
In that context, delaying the standard iPhone 18 starts to look a lot less surprising.
Instead of trying to manufacture huge numbers of several new models at once, Apple could focus September on its most sophisticated devices and leave the higher-volume models for a few months later.
What about the iPhone 18e?
That model is also expected to arrive later.
The current expectation is that the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will both be unveiled in early 2027.
There is also a possibility that a new generation of the iPhone Air could arrive during the same period, although reports about that model are still less consistent.
If this schedule is confirmed, the lineup will be divided very clearly.
The premium models would arrive in the second half of 2026.
The more affordable options would follow in early 2027.
That would be a major change in the way we think about a new iPhone generation.
So will the iPhone 17 stay current for longer?
Probably.
And that may be one of the most interesting consequences of this entire change.
After the September event, we could walk into an Apple Store and see the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max as the newest models in the lineup, while the iPhone 17 continues to serve as the standard model.
Only a few months later would the iPhone 18 arrive to replace it.
For anyone who has followed Apple launches for years, that breaks a very familiar pattern.
Until now, people who didn’t want to spend more on a Pro model knew September would also bring a new, more affordable option.
This year, they may have to wait a little longer.
This could be the beginning of a new iPhone release schedule
It is still too early to know whether this split will happen only in 2026 or whether Apple plans to make it a permanent part of its release strategy.
But there are good reasons to think the idea could stick around.
By launching the Pro models in September, Apple gives them as much room as possible to attract attention without immediately placing a cheaper model from the same generation alongside them.
Then, at the beginning of the following year, the company gets another major opportunity to put the iPhone back at the center of the conversation.
In the end, September will probably remain the month of Apple’s biggest launches.
It just may no longer be the month when we meet every new iPhone at once.
If the current reports are correct, that change starts now.
We should still get the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max in September.
But anyone waiting for the standard iPhone 18 will probably have to hold out until 2027.
