iOS 27 Finally Lets iPhone Users Set Alarm Volume Independently

Apple finally gives iPhone users separate volume controls for alarms, timers, notifications, and ringtones in iOS 27.

Not every meaningful upgrade needs to involve artificial intelligence. Among the major announcements at WWDC 2026, Apple quietly introduced a change in iOS 27 that could make millions of iPhone users very happy.

After years of requests, iOS will finally allow users to adjust the volume of alarms and timers independently from other sounds on the device.

It may sound like a small change, but anyone who has been startled awake by an alarm that was too loud, or worried about missing an alarm after lowering notification volume, knows exactly why this matters.

A frustration that has existed for years

Until now, the iPhone has handled several types of audio controls in a surprisingly limited way.

In practice, users who increased the volume to make sure their morning alarm was loud enough also ended up increasing the volume of notifications, alerts, and other system sounds.

Likewise, anyone trying to reduce the noise from messages and notifications often found themselves lowering alarm volume as well.

This limitation has been a frequent source of complaints for years across forums, social media platforms, and Apple user communities.

Many users resorted to workarounds, automations, or third-party apps to compensate for the lack of independent controls.

What changes in iOS 27

With iOS 27, Apple is introducing separate volume controls for different categories of sounds.

Users will be able to configure individual volume levels for:

  • Ringtones.
  • Alarms and timers.
  • System alerts and notification sounds.

This means you can keep your morning alarm loud enough to wake you up without making every notification throughout the day sound excessively loud.

It also allows users to reduce keyboard clicks, notification sounds, and other alerts without affecting alarms and timers.

A simple change with a big impact

While the feature did not receive the same attention as the new Siri or Apple Intelligence, it has the potential to improve the daily experience of nearly every iPhone owner.

These are often the kinds of improvements that matter most in everyday use, even more than some of the platform’s headline-grabbing technologies.

After all, almost everyone relies on alarms, timers, and notifications multiple times a day.

Giving users greater control over those sounds has been a long-standing request that Apple is finally addressing.

There is still one limitation

Despite the improvement, the first iOS 27 beta still includes one restriction.

Users can set a dedicated volume level for alarms and timers, but they cannot assign different volume levels to individual alarms.

In other words, every alarm will continue to use the same volume setting configured in the system.

Even so, this represents a significant improvement over the way audio controls have traditionally worked on the iPhone.
